I'm Matthew Topping, MRes student on the MRes/PhD CoMPLEX programme at UCL.

I am currently working on the viability of using certain insecticides to combat malaria, but more generally my interests cover mechanosensation in insects particularly with regards to the importance of chordotonal organs.

The above public domain image, taken from here, is of two whipworms (Trichuris trichiura), with the male being the much smaller worm. Along with roundworm (Ascaris lumbricoides) these helminths have infected hundreds of millions of humans worldwide and are responsible for a huge morbidity burden that falls disproportionately on the most vulnerable.

Miscellaneous work

None of my work so far has been published, but my Imperial supervisors and I are hoping to publish my MSc dissertation on helminthiasis. I am also currently helping to analyse some data on Drosophila circadian rhythms and courting rituals that will hopefully be published.
